Mysterious junk

in huge dimensions

In 2007, engineer Daniel González had what he thought was a brilliant idea. He wanted to create complete energy independence for Tenerife, preferably within five years.

All he lacked was the necessary financial resources of 22 billion euros, a large piece of land with lots of sunlight and the cooperation of the government.

His goal was to build a huge concave mirror with an area of 500 m², which would concentrate the sun's rays and reach temperatures of over 5000ºC. generate.

The further procedure had already been discussed and used in several other countries.

So he wanted to build a solar thermal power plant with a parabolic mirror, like those that already existed in the south of Spain, France and Los Angeles.

People living near this budding project near El Medano boycotted the completion of the facility. Fears arose, there was a lack of proper information about the project and, to make matters worse, the first buildings were also in agricultural areas. This was followed by initial inspections by the environmental protection authority APMUN, with the decision to close this construction site.

After several proceedings, the construction was stopped and the builder left his home of Santa Ursula and went into hiding in Panamá with a huge mountain of debt.

Since then, this facility has been rotting away and no one is interested in dismantling it. The legal assignments and ownership are a point of contention and this huge complex very close to the Atlantic is crumbling.

Photographically and for those curious, they are an experience and definitely worth a visit. However, the parts that fall around shrink and there are always people who want to enrich themselves with them.
